Comment:

Being able to resize the buddy list to smaller than the menubar width is
something that pidgin needs to specifically enable (as GTK+ by default
does not allow that). We enable this mostly because some translations have
incredibly long menu titles which drive the width of the window up well
beyond a reasonable width. The fact that GTK+ copes with this manual
hackery badly (in this case by overlaying an icon over the menu text) is
not surprising nor am I particularly sure it is something we should do
anything about (or even can do anything about).

Personally, I think enabling the free shrinking is a mistake and something
we shouldn't have done. However, given the language issue that wasn't a
 tenable position to take.

It is worth pointing out that fixing this to always place the icon after
Help will render the feature entire unavailable for anyone who shrinks the
 buddy list like this.

Unless anyone strenuously objects (and has new reasons for doing so) I'm
going to close this ticket as wontfix (though I'm open to moving it
Patches Welcome to allow for someone to come up with an alternate solution
to the problem if people would prefer).
