 I've got good news and bad news:

 Good news - this isn't your bug; it's an atk bug which I have just filed.

 Bad news - until this bug is fixed, blind users who have enabled the
 indication of text attributes on their braille display will not be able to
 use Pidgin.

 Therefore, is there any chance of switching to GTK_WRAP_WORD wherever
 GTK_WRAP_WORD_CHAR is currently being used until this bug is fixed and
 then protecting users with an #ifdef after? Yes, I realize that this sucks
 and that y'all shouldn't have to hack around other people's bugs, but it
 would be so, so awesome if you could in this case so braille users can use
 Pidgin.
