Comment:

 GNOME.

However, sending the following URI to someone, with 2.5.8 still results in
 no-link.

 gopher://gopher.std.com/11/The%20Online%20Book%20Initiative/Unix

The full list of IANA-registered URI schemes is: aaa, aaas, acap, cap,
cid, crid, data, dav, dict, dns, fax, file, ftp, go, gopher, h323, http,
https, icap, im, imap, info, ipp, iris, iris.beep, iris.xpc, iris.xpcs,
iris.lws, ldap, lsid, mailto, mid, modem, msrp, msrps, mtqp, mupdate,
news, nfs, nntp, opaquelocktoken, pop, pres, prospero, rtsp, service,
shttp, sip, sips, snmp, soap.beep, soap.beeps, tag, tel, telnet, tftp,
thismessage, tip, tv, urn, vemmi, wais, xmlrpc.beep, xmlrpc.beep, xmpp,
 z39.50r, z39.50s.

These should all work in the form of:

 <scheme name> : <hierarchical part> [ ? <query> ] [ # <fragment> ]

So it would be great if there was some way these could all work.
