The [http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/emoticons/ official] smileys for
neither :-/ and :-? smileys includes a question mark, nor do they strike
me as particularly good smileys. For that matter I don't think our smileys
are particularly good either (no offense to the Yahoo or pidgin smiley
artists). Smileys are just a terrible way to express anything more
complicated than "raw" emotions as they are open to far too much
interpretation (they suck at raw emotion too just less so).
It is worth noting that swapping the current smileys would confuse anyone
that has gotten used to the current mapping and so must have a rather
compelling reason behind it if you ask me, and as a rule I find meaning-
based arguments for smiley changes poor arguments.
I will grant that given that one of our smileys includes a literal
question mark this might seem confused/backwards to people but likely just
for the sender not recipient (unless they investigate what text was sent,
and even then probably not).
