 irssi has some sort of smart tab-completion which uses people who have
 spoken recently before people who haven't, implementing something like
 that would likely "solve" this problem by allowing the user to enter a
 (potentially single character) lead before hitting tab without needing to
 get into how best to remember (and when to save) the person most recently
 addressed.

 Thoughts?
