 Same problem here, I haven't made any changes to the preferences recently.
 And there is no proxy in my environment.

 Enabling the 'Use HTTP Method' check box allows me to login again. But I'm
 still unable to send messages:

 "Message could not be sent because a connection error occurred:"

 Please note: I'm running Pidgin 2.0.2, the version shipped with Solaris
 10.
