 I've made some further debugging and I think that this issue is not Pidgin
 related.

 The default MSN Server 'messenger.hotmail.com' is an alias which points to
 'messenger.hotmail.geo.msnmessenger.msn.com.akadns.net'. It looks like
 they are doing some DNS load balancing there. From one of my hosts this
 name resolves to 64.4.50.62 and from another host (connected via a
 different ISP) it resolves to 64.4.13.190.

 On the first host, where I'm encountering the connection problems I'm not
 able to connect to 64.4.50.62 on port 1863 using netcat (it remains in the
 'SYN_SENT' state forever). But I'm able to connect to 64.4.13.190.

 All I had to to is replacing 'messenger.hotmail.com' by 64.4.13.190. Now
 I'm able to use the MSN service as usual.
