 pidgin has many client-side features that official clients do not, we try
 rather hard not to have wire-level/protocol-level differences from the
 official clients, and that is very much what is being discussed.

 You assume that Yahoo would simply block the single person sending such a
 packet when it is more likely that if they were to bother noticing at all
 they would block any client identifying itself the way pidgin does. Though
 it is of course most likely that they will simply ignore it entirely
 (which doesn't make our doing it any better of an idea).

 Again, the worry is not that single users will be affected but that
 "pidgin" will be, for all users. The concern is also that such usage may
 do unexpected things as the servers are not expecting it to be done,
 unexpected things can of course do anything from deleting buddy lists, to
 locking accounts, to deleting accounts, to anything else.
