 Right, one that you are proposing is better one, I agree. But they aren't
 mutually exclusive, are they?

 When nothing is entered, it could do nothing or autocomplete nickname of
 the last person, that I've messaged to or when something was entered, it
 could autocomplete according to the symbol entered, just as you suggested.

 And why do you found manner that irssi do incredibly annoying? Maybe I
 didn't understood what "/msg-<servertag>" is?
