Comment:

 The server is returning a totally invalid response to the DIGEST-MD5
 authentication (the "XML Parser error: Extra content at end of the
 document" is an unrelated non-fatal message).

 In fact, at least looking at how DIGEST-MD5 proceeds with other servers,
 there should be another challenge/response pair before the server sends
 <success/>.

 What server is this running and were there any changes to the server
 configuration/software at about the same time as you upgraded Pidgin?
