 In Pidgin 2.5.x when new message was received icon in notification area
 starts blinking, icon next to menu appears, username in roster (contact
 list) is bolded, user's icon is changed.
 In Pidgin 2.6.1 username is not bolded and the icon is not changed. It is
 not possible to see which user sent the message just by looking at the
 contact list.



 Additional info:
 Using Ubuntu 8.10, Pidgin updated to 2.6.1 from Pidgin's PPA
