Comment:

 Contact aliases are stored locally and will never be over-ridden by
 anything the server sends us (right-click and expand the buddy then right-
 click the contact and alias that). But if the LiveJournal servers are
 preventing us from storing aliases in the roster that's pretty
 unfortunate. Can you get the Help->Debug Window output from when you alias
 a buddy (the buddy alias, not the contact alias) and the snippet of the
 initial roster from when you sign on that includes that buddy?
