 The reasons it was closed are in the comment which closed it, my comments
 on top of that are in my comment after that.

 Personally, I believe silent unnotified updating is evil as it causes
 random things to break for no apparent reason. As I said, I fully support
 the release notification plugin being modified to include links to the
 download locations to make fetching the new installer more easily. Beyond
 that I don't really think is necessary. Our Windows installer supports (to
 the best of my knowledge) silent unattended installations and as such can
 be put into an automated update process when needed.
