Comment:

 This is caused by Pidgin being built with support for Network Manager and
 NM not thinking you have any active network connections.

 You can pass the "-f" parameter to pidgin to force it online, but you
 should either fix Network Manager or disable it (or build Pidgin without
 support for it).
