 As the user interface is currently set up for group chats, the topic is
 shown in the top pane.  However, if the chat topic is very large, the
 panel becomes that large, potentially forcing the conversation window to
 be taller than the screen.

 It seems that line breaks are turned into spaces in status messages.
 Perhaps a similar strategy could be used for chat topics, or perhaps the
 topic could be abbreviated.
