 Log from a MUC on this subject:
 darkrain: Someone in #pidgin was having the same issue, although I didn't
 realize this was new in 2.6.0. The problem is that the server is sending
 an <img href='http://a3.twimg.com/...'/>, and Pidgin doesn't support
 loading images from external sites.
 changed in 2.6.0:
     * IMG tags without 'id' attributes are turned into links to the image
 URL.
  Florob: that is like SO stupid. It shows a broken image icon if there is
 a id and if there is none it shows the alt text. Oh and if there is
 neither it shows the url
