Comment:

The Help->About window reports it as version 2.5.2. I don't know if the
old version is still installed I am afraid.

This Elonex One T came with a built in operating system (Linos?) and
utilities with a graphical interface. The upgrade from 2.5.0 to 2.5.2
happened when I selected the desktop icon for "Software Upgrades". The
application presumably searches for available patches and upgrades - sadly
I haven't a clue what site it searches at the moment I am afraid. There
doesn't appear to be an option for uninstalling patches or the standard
applications ... only for removing ones that have been added later.

I wasn't aware I was running Pidgin as root ... I just turn the netbook on
and click on icons. I can see that I am going to have to involve myself a
 lot more!

To install applications manually, it wants two files in a Download folder
... a .info file and a .xap file. If two such files existed somewhere for
a complete later version of Pidgin, maybe I could install that? I have
searched but on your site I can only find instructions for setting up
automatic searching for upgrades using sudo ... but sudo does not appear
to be loaded on this netbook.
