 Confirmed. This does have to do with the saved settings on the machine. I
 have renamed the profile directory by removing the period at the head of
 the directory name, and Pidgin fired right up. Question: why now? Does it
 have to do with my passwords, which make use of characters from within the
 entire UTF-8 character set? (That is, my passwords are not limited to
 ascii characters)
