 The IRC plugin for pidgin uses the system hostname in part of the
 information it sends to every IRC server. This may be undesirable for
 people who need a certain hostname but do not want to broadcast it to the
 IRC server they are contacting. I attached a patch that sets up a simple
 account option to change what hostname is sent to an IRC server, without
 needing to change the system hostname. This patch applies both to the
 latest mtn and release 2.5.4
