Comment:

The dialog I 'proposed' was designed to indicate how ridiculous all of the
available options at that point would be. Since either:

  * you did want to quit, in which case the extra dialog is purely
 annoying.
  * you didn't want to quit, in which case maybe you hit the button
accidentally but we can't start second guessing every action people try to
take ('Did you really mean to send that IM?', 'Did you really mean to open
an IM window to XYZ?', etc.).
  * you wanted to minimize the window, in which case you should have hit
the minimize button, and being kind to people who hit the wrong button
 here is unhelpful.
  * you want pidgin to hide itself in the notification area now, in which
case you should just have gone and changed the pidgin preference.

Yes, closing pidgin has more serious consequences than closing a terminal
tends to (but closing a terminal is occasionally as problematic, if not
more problematic as you can't always 'just sign back on').

If you don't want to accidentally close pidgin, and don't have pidgin
hiding in the notification area, why are you hitting the close button at
all? If you really hit it by accident with any real frequency perhaps you
should look into better ways of fixing that problem then by having your
applications prompt you (like by finding a window management environment
which can be made to prompt you when you close *all* applications, or
 specific applications).
