 The thing you are proposing could be a good feature (maybe with a "save
 this as the default action"!

 The problem is that closing pidgin is not like, for instance closing
 gnome-terminal: you can close gnome-terminal if you are not using it
 (there's no side effect), but if you close pidgin because you are not
 using it, you cannot be reached by people.
