 When smooth scrolling is on, and the rate of scroll is about 5-10 lines
 per second, the window does not stay at the bottom of scroll for long, it
 sticks as if you were trying to look at history, so you have to keep
 scrolling don, like by holding page down.    This is reported to happen in
 ubuntu here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/329248
 and on XP for me.    It seems to work fine with smooth scrolling disable.d
