Comment:

 If contacts.msn.com is resolving to 127.0.0.1 for you then your
 networking/DNS configuration is broken and there isn't anything pidgin can
 do about that. Setting that in the hosts file is explicitely breaking it,
 so while that might recreate your problem it isn't indicative of anything
 or helpful to us in any way.
