 A bare JID on the roster result is incorrect given my reading of the XMPP
 RFCs (Section 9.1.2 of
 [http://xmpp.org/rfcs/rfc3920.html#rfc.section.9.1.2 RFC3920] and 9.1.2.1
 of [http://xmpp.org/internet-drafts/draft-saintandre-
 rfc3920bis-08.html#rfc.section.9.1.2.1 RFC3920bis]). Specifically point 3
 of the bis draft. Though having said that I would imagine that Communigate
 is creating (and delivering) the roster result stanzas using point 4 from
 that section (a reading I don't share and which isn't shared by a number
 of members of the jdev at conference.jabber.org chatroom but which I can at
 least somewhat understand), as opposed to just having done this
 incorrectly.

 As to how pidgin should handle this, given my reading, pidgin is doing
 exactly what it should be doing. Though perhaps the addition of some debug
 output indicating what has occured might be in order (so it doesn't just
 look like pidgin ignored it entirely).

 I've been told that the Communigate people have in the past been rather
 receptive to issues and quick to fix them, so hopefully that is still the
 case and we can get this resolved.
