 This happened to me earlier and just happened again: I got an
 authorization request from a gtalk user. After accepting it the user
 appears in my contact list under their custom alias. At the same time a
 dialog appears to edit the contact. After clicking OK in that dialog
 (leaving the alias empty), the contact appears *a second time* in my
 contact list, this time under their xxx at gmail.com address.

 The contact should appear only once, under the alias I configured
 (defaulting to the contact's selected alias).
