 While I sort of like your suggestion I'm afraid it will increase the
 complextiy of the status selector even as it may decrease the initial
 familiarity of it for users of the Google Talk client.

 Consider that we wouldn't want to allow that method to work when a saved
 status is currently selected (as it would be unclear what that would do
 to/with the saved status) and that when you have a status message the
 entry area is already there.

 The problem is that we didn't want people who weren't using status
 messages to have to see an empty text box at all times, perhaps the time
 for needing to hide it has passed and we should just bring it back at all
 times (disabled when a saved status is selected).
