 There seems to be no in-between privacy settings that allows you to
 receive new contacts requests while only allowing actual messages from
 your contacts.

 When you give your IM address to someone new, you'd like to be able to
 receive their permission to be added to your contacts, but at the same
 time, not open yourself up to anonymous and unauthorized spam.

 I've only noticed this in Yahoo, but I suppose since it's a global
 setting, it could affect others too.
