Comment:

 The GetABacktrace page is still largely relevant you are just going to
 have to manually break into pidgin (by hitting ctrl-c in gdb when pidgin
 is 'frozen') before you can get the backtrace information. Ideally you
 would do that a few times during the freeze so we can get a good sampling
 of what is actually going on (as you may not hit the right moment the
 first time).

 What GTK+ theme are you using? Are you using something like compiz? Are
 you running GNOME? If you run 'gconftool-2 -g
 /desktop/gnome/interface/document_font_name' from a terminal does it take
 a little while to return?
