 I've got a similar issue on my Pidgin install on Vista.  I've managed to
 trace it to the History plugin in my case.  The first message I receive
 from a buddy pops up the window which hangs for a few seconds after which
 any subsequent messages display immediately until I log out and log back
 in again.  If I disable the History plugin the problem disappears.  Both
 my XP and Ubuntu Pidgin installs work perfectly fine, though my Vista
 machine's chat logs are substantially larger as its my work PC if that
 could potentially contribute to the bug.  I've also tried the Enhanced
 History plugin but same story.  The only way I can get rid of the chat
 windows 'hanging' is to disable the History plugin.
