Well, here's my problem: I have one account where I need to be on/offline
depending on my availability. I have another account, where I would like
to appear offline all the time. Then I have one account which only very
few people know, where I should be online all the time, even in meetings.
Then there's another account where I have to appear online whenever I'm
available but not during meetings ... you get the picture, I suppose.

What I'd suggest for setting statuses per account: add an option in the
status listbox at the bottom of the contacts list, saying "Per account".
When this is checked, you get an additional area at the bottom of the
contact list, separated from the contacts with a splitter. In this window
you have all accounts listed, and can select individual statuses for each
account. When you click/double-click the splitter, the area minimizes to
the bottom of the contacts list. The splitter remains visible, so you can
drag it up and show the list of statuses per account again, or you can
click/double-click it so the area is restored to the previous size.

I wouldn't call this a clunky solution. However, one has to keep in mind
that whatever solution is provided for this problem, you cannot get around
showing a more complex user interface than when you have only one global
status, since you provide more complex functionality.
