 The IM server where I work has many pre-defined groups.  Unfortunately I
 don't even need to see these buddies in my list, yet removing them only
 results in the buddies and the groups returning upon next sign-in.

 Trillian offers this feature of creating a "parent" group that can hold
 children groups.  I have mocked up a screenshot of this idea:

 With the concept of a "parent" group, I could then collapse this group so
 that they all don't clutter up the buddy list, as seen in this mockup.  If
 I cannot delete the groups at least I can hide them from view in this
 manner:
