Comment:

 If you are indicating that whether pidgin closes or not depends on whether
 there is currently a tray icon displayed or not (when using the 'display
 on new messages' preference) then that is a bug and should be fixed.

 It is not a bug that pidgin behaves differently for the different uses of
 the tray icon as those people who use the tray icon as notification areas
 were intended to be used ('display on new messages') are incredibly
 unlikely to assume that an application will choose not to close but rather
 hide to the notification area. Whereas users who use the notification area
 the way it has been abused (specifically the way Windows seemed to all-but
 encourage, that is 'display always') do in fact expect applications to
 work that way.
