Comment:

 problem solved - but I don't know exactly how.  I re-installed gstreamer*
 packages, using packman versions instead of SUSE's own from it's Gnome
 repositories.  I then tried reverting back to SUSE packages but I could
 not repro the problem. I'm back again to packman packages and all is ok.
 Wierd.
