Comment:

 If when you do not have a connect server pidgin still attempts to tunnel
 to gmail.com then pidgin is unable to complete the necessary SRV requests
 (either because your DNS server doesn't support them or something on your
 network is eating them). In either case (assuming you can't fix SRV record
 queries) you can use a connect server of talk.google.com.
