Comment:

 When I use talk.google.com, it fails with a 404. Among the HTTP Headers is
 this one:

 X-Squid-Error: ERR_DNS_FAIL 0

 Not sure if that's related to the SRV requests you were talking about.
 However, if I put in talk.l.google.com, I get an HTTP 200 response but
 then a Read error in Pidgin.

 What's also confusing to me is that if it were a DNS problem, shouldn't
 the other IM clients fail?
