Comment:

 This is the workaround mentioned someone in the comments. It should fix
 this specific situation, but isn't a long-term solution to work-around
 Openfire's issues.

 I'm going to close this as 'cantfix' because I think we've done all we
 can, the rest is XEP-related issues and Openfire implementation issues.
