Comment:

 That probably means you have multiple versions of pidgin installed, one of
 which is crashing and the other of which isn't. Check what path the
 launcher is using. It will probably be /usr/bin/pidgin, while you likely
 have another pidgin in /usr/local/ (although it could be elsewhere, `which
 pidgin` should tell you).
