Comment:

 Confirmed that I'm using /usr/bin/pidgin and /usr/lib/libpurple.so.0 (and
 that both are the files listed for the 2.5.8 package by Synaptic). No
 libpurple or related files in /usr/local/lib/.

 Will post a debug log asap.

 As a side note, I'm getting a substantial number of dbus errors, such as
 (19:39:26) dbus: The signal "drawing-tooltip" caused some dbus error. (If
 you are not a developer, please ignore this message.)
 and
 (19:40:57) dbus: The signal "conversation-extended-menu" caused some dbus
 error. (If you are not a developer, please ignore this message.)
 Should I report this?
