 Steps to reproduce: (confirmed on Fedora and Crunchbang 9.04)

 1) Change the setting from Away to Offline
 2) close preferences
 3) close pidgin
 4) start pidgin
 5) check setting, verify that the setting is back to the original value
 you started with.

 I have not confirmed this on 2.5.6. I have not confirmed this on other
 operating systems. I do not know if this affects windows. Please let me
 know what logs I can attach to help, and what information will help.
