Comment:

 If you used a saved status to get your status message, that would be why
 the message didn't stay.  If you've typed your message in by selecting
 "Away" (for example) and typing in the box, then changing to another
 status such as available should retain the message; this was changed
 around 2.5.2 or so (previously we did not retain the message).

 We chose to have the default New Saved Status status be away because at
 the time we thought it would be the most commonly wanted status to work
 with.  I can recall only one other time this was questioned besides you,
 so I'm not sure this really matters much one way or the other.
