 Just FYI, I've created a plugin which does this:
 http://costela.net/projects/awayonlock/

 It currently only works with gnome-screensaver, since it's AFAICT the only
 one which advertises its status through DBUS, but it's a start.
 I've seen some mentions that kscreensaver would start using DBUS as well,
 but since I don't use KDE I can't really tell. Please let me know if
 there's any other screensavers which could be supported.
