Comment:

You can most certainly choose what status pidgin starts you in, by default
it starts you in whatever status you were in when you last quit. If you
don't want that you can select a specific status in the preferences to
apply at startup. But both of those things are unrelated to the operation
of saved statuses and the discussion we are having here.

The reason the saved statuses default to Away is in large part simply
because they always have, but also because up until relatively recently
the Available status on most protocols did not support a status message so
saving an available status would have been pointless. Additionally, in my
experience the usage of available messages is *far* less common than the
usage of messages with away statuses and once you are already spending the
time to type in a status message the extra time needed to change the
status dropdown is minimal in comparison.

I meant how, using the interface, would a user specify when they wanted a
change to modify the currently selected saved status and when they wanted
it to start a new status?

A saved status in pidgin saves the status and message globally and for
each account with an 'exception'. If you don't want that don't use saved
statuses, if you just want status (and not message) changes then use the
global statuses from the top of the status selector, that's what they are
there for. It would be possible to modify saved statuses so that they
could support not saving (and leaving) the message but I think that would
likely just be *very* confusing for most people.

You can save a temporary status, the "New status..." dialog prefills to
match the current status when in a temporary status (it doesn't do this
for a saved status, which I have often thought was a bug).
