 How does the "getting the same status every 5-10 minutes" manifest itself?
 (I'm not familiar enough with Google's client to know).

 If you're logged in to both the gmail chat client and Pidgin, the chat
 client will take priority (gtalk available statuses are at priority=24,
 whereas Pidgin uses priority=1 (higher takes priority over lower)).  A
 plugin is in a (yet-unreleased) version of the Pidgin Plugin Pack that
 will allow you to configure this per-account (and if I get my act
 together, configure it per-status).
