 That was my first thought, too.  I am running Norton Internet Security
 2009, however, I gave Pidgin.exe a free pass through the firewall.  The
 reason that I don't believe that Norton is the culprit is that my previous
 version of Pidgin worked fine even though my Security suite has not
 changed.  My previously installed version of Pidgin was 2.5.5.

 The fact that my method of connecting to the network seems to make a
 differance in Pidgin's behavior is another argument that the problem has
 something to do with my environment, but again, Pidgin 2.5.5 was working
 fine.
