 Update:  I figured out that it does not matter whether I'm connected
 wirelessly or via wired ethernet, but instead what network I'm connected
 to.  This leads me to believe that the router on the misbehaving network
 is interfereing somehow with Pidgin.  Still, this conflict does not happen
 for other computers on the same network which are using ealier versions of
 Pidgin.  I am going to upgrade one of the other computers on this network
 to 2.6.6 and see what happens.
