 I am experiencing the same issues on Ubuntu 8.10 Pidgin 2.5.2

 Actually from a cold boot I can log in to my account. Then when I sign-off
 and try to reconnect it doesn't sign me on.

 On a Ubuntu 7.04 system, I have the old GAIM (2.0.0beta). This one logs on
 and off without any issues, as many times I like.
 Only a dialog with the message that "This messenger will expire.... by
 August 15th, 2009... bla bla bla" pops up.

 Restarting pidgin doesn't help; Rebooting does.

 I couldn't see anything strange with lsof... however I don't know anything
 about pidgin's internals ;-)
