 I just had the same problems, I applied the patch as listed above, and it
 works now, however just though I'd share with everyone a system message
 from Yahoo:

 Warning: This version of Messenger will expire on August 15, 2009. Please
 upgrade to the latest supported version:
 http://messenger.yahoo.com/download .
