 So out of three pieces (four if you count the status icon) of information
 in the infopane one (or two) of them is redundant and so you want to axe
 the entire thing? That is not exactly sound reasoning.

 Further, the entire point of presenting the status message in the infopane
 is that it is useful information to see without needing to hover over a
 tiny target and wait for a tooltip, so pushing it back there is not really
 reasonable.

 You are not typing to a buddy icon, you are typing to a person. Many
 people don't have buddy icons, or have default buddy icons that do not
 identify them in any meaningful way. It happens to be useful to you in
 some very specific cases, but that doesn't change that it is unrelated to
 the functionality of that area of the conversation window.

 Yes, the fact that we don't honor the GTK+ toolbar format setting is
 something that should be fixed.

 As I said, I do not know if plugins can put icons into the toolbar, but
 whether they can or not doesn't change whether they do. It is somewhat
 reasonable to suggest that plugins should be able to use the formatting
 toolbar, but it is far from necessary, especially since the formatting
 toolbar can be hidden.

 Unless your message fonts are significantly smaller than your interface
 fonts (which they may very well be) I do not believe for a minute that
 your changes gained you three lines.

 Even if you did gain three lines, the costs associated with your changes
 are simply not worth the changes to my mind.

 There is one further issue with having the buddy icon by the text area,
 you cannot have the text area cleanly resize with the amount of entered
 text because the icon causes size problems.

 The entirety of your space savings come from disabling the infopane, if
 you want to do that you can do so right now, but you lose seeing the buddy
 icon. You are free to make that call however you'd like.
