 I've been told by a correspondent that a succession of privmsgs came with
 extra characters at the end, like this:

 00:29 <reuben> I use nicks precisely I  IIII I I I   I I  I   II  I

 apparently none of my channel messages have that problem, and only some of
 my privmsgs, the first few in a conversation; after that, the problems
 stopped.
