Comment:

 This appears to work for me, in as much as the entry area in the
 preferences window correctly shows the color I chose. Do you not see that
 happening? Or is the problem that you see that but actual messages sent in
 conversations do not have that background color set? If the problem is
 that your outgoing messages do not actually have that background color
 then on what protocols are you seeing this?
